Educational Objectives 

At the completion of this CME activity, subscribers should be able to:

  • Utilize strict and well-defined criteria in the evaluation and diagnosis of thyroid follicular lesions.
  • Describe the various cytomorphologic features of metastatic malignancies, emphasizing differential diagnosis, pitfalls and clues to determine a primary site of origin.
  • Discuss the use of ancillary studies in the work-up of metastases, with particular emphasis on immunohistochemistry using an algorithmic approach.
  • Recognize the different types of tissue fragments in FNAB specimens, recognize several cytomorphologic patterns of FNAB specimens, and render a diagnosis based on a pattern recognition of FNAB specimen.
  • Discuss the newer aspects of molecular alterations in thyroid neoplasms.
  • Review the approach to difficult lesions of the salivary glands.
  • Render a diagnosis based on pattern recognition of thyroid FNAB specimens and formulate a broad differential diagnosis.
  • Recognize the basic architectural pattern seen with salivary gland aspirates and be able to identify and diagnose common benign and malignant salivary gland lesions.
  • Render a diagnosis based on pattern recognition and salivary gland FNAB specimens and formulate a broad differential diagnosis.
  • Describe the basic technique and pitfall avoidance of fine needle aspiration biopsy performance.
